Various Facts About Ramsay Hunt Syndrome
the name may be foreign and make you wonder, what is Ramsay Hunt Syndrome? This is a rare neurological disorder characterized by facial nerve palsy and a rash on the ears or mouth.
In some cases, ear disorders such as ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and hearing loss can also occur. More specifically, here are some facts about this disease:
- caused by Virus
Ramsay Hunt Syndrome is caused by the Varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chickenpox and shingles. To note, this virus can “live” (but not active) for decades in the body of people who had chickenpox as a child.
Then, this virus can reactivation and cause interference. It could be herpes zoster, or in some cases, develop into Ramsay Hunt Syndrome as experienced by Justin Bieber. Unfortunately, the reason why the virus reactivates and affects the facial nerve is not yet clear.
- The Symptoms Are Not Just Facial Paralysis
The most noticeable symptom is abnormal paralysis of the face, as well as a rash near one or both ears. When the face is paralyzed, the muscles may feel harder or out of control, as if they are losing strength.
The rash that appears usually looks like red, pus-filled blisters. Can be on the inside, outside, or around the ear. In some cases, a rash can also appear in the mouth, especially on the roof of the mouth or the top of the throat.
Even so, not all people with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome develop a rash. In some cases, the rash may not appear, but there is still some facial paralysis.
Symptoms of this syndrome are also not just facial paralysis and rash. Some other complaints that can be experienced are:
- Pain in the sore ear.
- Pain in the neck.
- Ringing in the ears or tinnitus.
- Hearing disorders.
- Difficulty closing the eye on the affected side of the face.
- Decreased sense of taste.
- Vertigo or dizziness spinning.
- Slightly slurred talk.
- Facial Paralysis Can Be Permanent
If the syndrome is treated as soon as symptoms appear, long-term complications usually won’t occur. However, if treatment is not taken promptly, there is a high risk of serious complications.
One of them is permanent weakness of the facial muscles or hearing loss. In some cases, the sufferer may not be able to completely close the affected eye.

As a result, the eyes can become very dry. If eye drops or lubricants are not used, the surface of the eye or cornea can be damaged. This can cause constant corneal irritation or permanent vision loss, although the risk is very small.
If Ramsay Hunt Syndrome damages the facial nerve, the sufferer may also feel pain, even after he doesn’t have the condition anymore. This condition is called postherpetic neuralgia. Pain occurs because the damaged nerves do not detect sensations properly and send the wrong signals to the brain.
- Ramsay Hunt Syndrome Can Be Cured
The most common treatment for Ramsay Hunt Syndrome is antiviral medication. Your doctor may also recommend treatment based on your specific symptoms.
Such as pain relievers to reduce pain, antihistamines, anti-seizure drugs, and others. Eye drops may also be prescribed to help keep the eye lubricated and prevent corneal damage.
