On the same day, the United Nations also established the Environment Programme. Then in 1973, this commemoration was first held with the theme “Only One Earth”, the same as the theme this year. Various themes have been raised in different years, for example “Only One Future for Our Children” in 1979, or “A Tree for Peace” in 1986.
Four years later, the United Nations Environment Program made World Environment Day a momentum to highlight critical issues related to environmental damage. For example, regarding the destruction of the Earth’s ozone layer, the problem of hazardous waste, global warming, and so on. Starting in 1988, the host of World Environment Day celebrations began to rotate to various countries around the world.
The first country to get a turn is the city of Bangkok, Thailand. Furthermore, various countries also have the opportunity to host this commemoration, starting from India, South Africa, China, Brazil, and others. Meanwhile, for this year, the host is held by Sweden, especially in Sverige.
